Last
weekend Gavin and I took a spontaneous trip to Namur, capital of
French-speaking Belgium, about an hour south of Brussels. It's a
lovely little city famous for its long history (the Celts, Gauls,
Franks, Romans, Belgians, French, Spanish, Dutch and Germans have all
ruled it at some point), its traditional snail dish, breathtaking
view of the Ardennes mountains and the Meuse river and its huge and
impressive citadel, which was expanded by none other than Vauban
himself. We really loved the view of the city and its surroundings
from the citadel, and there are some nice cafés, restaurants and
shops to visit at the top as well. You can drive up to the top if you
don't want to walk, but even so it may take you a while to see it all
– Napoleon didn't call it the termite mound of Europe for nothing!
