Danshuei

Visiting the remains of the old Dutch fort Fort Anthonio in Danshuei. The Spanish arrived in Danshuei in the early 1600s but were expelled some ten years later by the Dutch. The Dutch encouraged Han Chinese from Fujian and Guangdong to settle in Danschuei (and later Taiwan as a whole.) They are the ancestors of 84% of the Taiwanese population (vs. 2% aboriginal and 14% 'mainland' Chinese, those whose ancestors came after 1949.) In its heyday, Danshuei was a major fishing and trade port; these days it is a small fishing village with three universities and lots to see.
